The Institute of Black Culture, Media and Sport requires six trainee film makers to work on “The African History of Sport” documentary feature film and learning pack, which was recently funded by Heritage Lottery Fund. Please apply by May 30, 2015.  During the two year production schedule, trainees can request attachment to any of the following film making trades, provided they are operational:

Position 1&2

Positions 1 & 2: Trainee Researchers Required

Two trainees are required to assist research into ancient African sports data and artefacts; identify, analyse and collate materials on Neolithic hunting tools, sports and leisure activities in ancient Egyptian and Nile Valley civilizations; help develop relevant and appropriate interviews, photographs, footage and online images; advise management committee, production staff (film director, editor and camera operator) on relevant data, creative personnel as or whenever required to do so; as well as assist scriptwriting.

Additional tasks for which research assistance is required

  • Identify relevant documents, books, artefacts, photographs, other online images and archive footage from BBC and other sources.
  • Identify appropriate interviewees, actors/actresses and children;
  • Conduct film interviews;
  • Provide training supervision opportunities for two trainee researchers and two volunteers;
  • Present and refine research findings in academic prose;
  • Assist preparation of learning pack;
  • Evaluate project stages of completion.

Ideal Candidate

  • Research experience.
  • Love and keen knowledge of sports, particularly black sporting achievements;
  • Reliable, responsible and dependable in fulfilling obligations;
  • Good ITC skills and an ability to write clear prose;
  • Scriptwriting experience (optional);

  • An understanding of archival/museum research procedures;
  • Self-control—politeness. The ability to maintain composure in challenging situations;

Position 3

Cinematographer (Camera Operator)
Trainee Required

One trainee cinematographer or camera operator required. This audio visual position comprises shooting/filming artefacts, documents, photographs, interviews and simulations.

TASKS

  • Liaise with production crew to plan, design, arrange and deliver shooting activities.
  • Collaborate with technical trainees and volunteers.
  • Liaise with director and production manager to purchase, rent, hire and monitor gear and supplies, including equipment and studio rentals.
  • Help organise images, sound and lighting production requirements.

Ideal candidate

  • Some/limited film production experience
  • Interest in film production
  • Driver’s license (optional)

LINES OF COMMUNICATION

  • Volunteers will liaise with the camera operator/cinematographer only.

Position 4

Film Editor Trainee Required

Trainee film editor required. This position consists of assembling and editing footage, music, sound and graphics into a high quality audio-visual product.

TASKS

  • Liaise with director and production manager to deliver footage, other relevant content that enables editor to meet deadlines.
  • Assist with renting, purchasing, hiring and monitoring editing supplies, including equipment, production space and studio rentals, in consultation with editor and chair.

Ideal Candidate

  • Career interest in audio visual editing skills. Ability to do good graphics;
  • Willingness and ability to work late or start early.

  • Reliable, responsible and dependable in fulfilling obligations;
  • Willingness to take and offer creative opinions and directions;
  • Self-control—ability to maintaining composure in very difficult situations;
  • Rigour in completing work tasks to deadline;

Position 5

Marketing & Promotion Trainees Required

Two trainees are required to assist the marketing and promotion manager. This combined position is responsible for maximizing demand for the African History of Sport documentary and learning pack; by targeting relevant sectors with promotion and publicity materials. Trainees are to:

TASKS

  • Liaise with marketing & promotion manager to build marketing strategy
  • Research additional market potential;
  • Assist production of publicity and promotion materials;
  • Liaise with web designer and provide materials for website.
  • Assist with making screenings arrangements;
  • Help evaluate project stages of completion.

Ideal Candidate

  • Marketing/promotion qualification or experience;
  • Ability to collect feedback data
  • Ability and willingness to do field market research
